Twenty years ago, Kisterem opened its doors with a clear conviction: that progressive contemporary art can create conversations across generations and geographies. Showing local and international artists from the beginning, the gallery launched a programme spanning different media and bringing together young artists alongside figures of the Hungarian avant-garde underground. Since then, it has grown from a tiny gallery space into one of the defining platforms of Hungarian contemporary art – remaining curious, independent, and deeply committed to artists throughout.
Across more than 150 exhibitions, including solo, duo, and group presentations in our own spaces and in external locations, Kisterem has worked with established and emerging artists alike, creating connections between different generations, positions, and practices. Alongside exhibitions, the gallery has collaborated with local partners and international curators, and participated in nearly 100 art fairs in cities including London, Paris, Basel, Torino, Brussels, Vienna, Rotterdam, Cologne, Warsaw, Berlin, and Budapest.
Looking back at twenty years also means acknowledging the many artists, collaborators, colleagues, visitors, and conversations that have shaped the gallery along the way. Thank you to everyone who contributed to these two decades!
