Dominika TRAPP was among the winners of the 2023 Esterházy Art Award.
The cultural significance of the Esterházy Art Award is not only reflected in the awarding of the prize, but also in the accompanying exhibition. Due to its size, its central role and the careful selection of the nominated artists, it is a benchmark for the young Hungarian art scene. Established in 2009, the award aims to promote contemporary art and international dialogue.
For the eighth edition of the competition, 262 artists applied. An independent international jury of experts selected 18 entries for the prize. Breaking the Frame – Making Future, an exhibition of selected works by the shortlisted artists, was on view at the Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art from 15 December 2023 to 3 March 2024.
The jury’s assessment:
In the landscapes of Dominika TRAPP (✻1988, Budapest, lives and works in Budapest), organ-like openings and stretches of traps are both attractive and terrifying, weaving together in front of us and beyond the edges of the drawings. A sinister narrative is outlined in a series of layered sheets with antiqued zigzag edges and paper corners. The meticulously drawn and inked series is surrounded by a swiftly gestured, disjointed horizontal band of black, forming one of the most contemporary examples of Hungarian visionary landscape painting.
